Belasco Theatre

Description

Just over 100 years old, this classic Times Square–area theater is notable for its architectural and artistic legacy as well as for the many important Broadway shows that have been staged here. The original murals were recently restored, bringing art deco grandeur back to the space. Conceived as a smaller, intimate setting for straight dramatic plays (Broadway greats like John Barrymore and Lillian Gish have graced the stage), the Belasco has also hosted outrageous musical productions like Oh, Calcutta! and Rocky Horror. In 2008, Spike Lee filmed performances of the rock musical Passing Strange at the Belasco, and the subsequent movie features shots of the theater inside and out.
