Roosevelt Island Tramway
Description
When it opened in 1976, this unusual link connecting Roosevelt Island to Manhattan’s Upper East Side was the first commuter aerial tram in North America. Today, two crimson gondolas take riders between 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan to Tramway Plaza on Roosevelt Island every 7 to 15 minutes. Along the way the cars rise 250 feet in the air, affording magnificent views of Midtown, Long Island City and the East River. The cost is a single MTA swipe each way.
